The national anniversary of October 28, 1940 was celebrated with all pomp and solemnity and with the participation of thousands of citizens in Glyfada.
In the morning, the praise service was held at the Holy Church of St. Tryphon Terpsithea, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, Mr.Mr. Antoniou, in the presence of the Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou, the entire municipal authority, members of parliament and representatives of the city’s institutions and associations.
The solemn speech of the day was delivered in the church by the Director of the 3rd General High School of Glyfada, Mrs. Athina Gritzala.
This was followed by a memorial service and the laying of wreaths at the Heroes’ Monument in Agios Tryphon Square. The celebration of the national anniversary culminated with the big student parade, which took place on G. Gennimata.
The Mayor of Glyfada, George Papanikolaou, who together with his wife Eva admired and applauded the participants of the parade, made the following statement:
“After the NO, the battle began. The defence of the ancestral lands. Every inch of Greek land. The march to the front, in adverse and extreme conditions. The struggle through snow and mud and hardship. Days when, as they wrote in their diaries, even a piece of bread seemed a luxury. They didn’t hesitate to throw themselves into the war, they never chickened out. All these heroes, anonymous and nameless, are honoured today and on every national anniversary. And our children, who have grown old today, will make sure that their memory remains unquenched and their courage is passed on intact from generation to generation. Happy Birthday Greece”!
Presenting, as every year, the parade, Mrs.Eleni Zafeiropoulou – Megalakaki, a long-time member of the Department of Education of the Municipality of Glyfada, stressed, among other things: “With the epic of ’40 a new immortal and bright page of history was written, a new glory and a wonderful greatness for our Motherland was born. Greece once again became the standard-bearer of Whiteness, inviting the peoples of the Earth to emulate her example”.
The coordination of the parade was undertaken by the Department of Education of the Municipality of Glyfada, under the supervision of Mayor George Papanikolaou and the coordination of the responsible Deputy Mayor Anni Kauka. The Deputy Mayor of the City and Daily Life Nikos Tsampiras was in charge of the organization, who was on the front lines from early morning, taking care of every detail, while the Cleaning Service under Deputy Mayor Yannis Tzouvelis and the Green Department under Deputy Municipal Councillor Stavros Yakoumakis took care of the area in the best possible way. Everything was in perfect order, as befits the day. Happy Birthday to our Greece
