It is a great asset for a scientist to be able to present specialised topics in a simple, understandable and comprehensible way for the general public. Speaking yesterday in Glyfada, the Emeritus Professor of Biology and Genetics at the University of Athens, former Chairman of the Biology Department of the University of Athens, Theocharis Patargias, made use of this gift. This was one of the reasons why his talk, on the topic “A tour of the sanctuary of life: origin, evolution, mechanisms of living organisms”, excited the participants of the winter semester of the Municipal Free Open University of Glyfada.
With vivid examples and images, the audience discovered:
How life began and evolved
The basic mechanisms that keep organisations running
The potential of genetics and stem cells for therapeutics
The latest scientific developments and their therapeutic perspectives.
It was a fascinating tour of the magical world of life, making science accessible and interesting for everyone!
The institution of Lifelong Learning, which was established six years ago in our city by the Mayor of Glyfada, George Papanikolaou, is experiencing more and more growth, is being strengthened with new subjects and enriched with new themes.
