On Monday, November 5, 2018, the new cemetery of the Municipality of Glyfada began its operation, with the inauguration of the Holy Church of the Pammestitos Taxiarches.

The cemetery was designed, licensed and constructed at the expense of the Municipality of Glyfada, on land granted by a special law in December 2014 by the Ministry of National Defence. The cemetery’s Church was constructed with a donation from Thanasis Martinos.

In particular, at the end of 2014, a special law granted a 42-acre area to build a new cemetery within the boundaries of the Air Force facilities in Ano Glyfada, where the Telecommunications and Electronic Media Factory (ETHM) has been housed for decades. Since the beginning of 2015, the Municipality of Glyfada, with due care and respect for the environment, proceeded with the necessary technical studies for the initiation, licensing, and completion of this important project, with significant social implications. Within the cemetery area, a sanctuary of modern architectural conception was constructed.

The cemetery site starts one kilometre above the last house in the area of Terpsithea, i.e., it is outside the residential area. A military cemetery for the Air Force was created in part of the area for the first time in our country. A memorial has been built on the site, listing about 750 names of the fallen of our Air Force from its foundation before the First World War until today, and an Air Force aircraft has been placed there.

The completion of the project reflects its original architectural goal, which was to create a space where the natural environment will dominate, while the final feeling and image of the space will not resemble the usual image of our country’s cemeteries, where marble and the built landscape dominate. The burial areas in the greater part of the cemetery do not consist of obvious grave configurations, as is common in most cemeteries in our country, but are located covered within larger units that follow the slope of the ground while maintaining the character of its natural configuration. In total, more than 1,000 trees were planted, while the Municipality of Glyfada constructed a new perimeter road, with lighting and fencing, as well as the necessary hydraulic works for the drainage of the cemetery’s rainwater.

With the opening of the new cemetery, the operation of the new digital platform has begun, through which authorized funeral homes have the opportunity to submit electronic burial requests both in the new and the old cemetery of our municipality. The managers of the offices wishing to apply for the first time need to come to the municipality in order to pay the relevant fee and to identify themselves as valid users of the system. This is a one-off visit.
