Today, Prophet Elias celebrates the beloved, picturesque chapel in Ymittos, above our city. It is a celebration that every year, all Glyfadians look forward to with longing and emotion. Our mountain is illuminated and when the weather permits, as it did this year, we climb the path leading to the chapel to worship the grace of the great Prophet of Christianity. To pray with reverence and devotion. At the same time, we are given the opportunity to admire the magnificent panoramic view of our city, which stretches from the mountains to the sea and ideally combines the beauty of the urban landscape with a sense of the countryside.
Last night, the path was filled with life, with lights leading the way of the faithful. A wonderful picture, which is captured in the photos.
At the Panhellenic Vespers in the “chapel of St. Lia”, the words of His Eminence, Metropolitan Antonios of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, enlightened the mind and filled our hearts with love.
The Mayor of Glyfada, George Papanikolaou, referred to this great celebration with emotion, calling everyone to climb the mountain this year, with faith and respect. He emphasized:
“We walked in the alleys of Prophet Elias in the evenings….”, says the good old folk song.
We in Glyfada definitely walk one night every year, in the uphill alley to the chapel of Prophet Elias.
Up high on our Hymettus.
I clarify that this year the weather conditions normally allow the ascent to our chapel.
A special custom, a tradition that we keep with love, young and old alike.
With faith and with respect.
At the beginning of the path to the chapel, at the foot of Mount Hymettus, the members of the Association are as always there to welcome us with traditional goodies, cool water, loukoumia, nuts and tsipouro.
And this year, let’s all be there
