A jewel of culture in the heart of Glyfada, the “Melina Mercouri” Cinema is a reference point for every citizen who loves art and wishes to experience it in a place of high aesthetics and a friendly atmosphere.

It bears the name of an iconic Greek woman who identified her voice with culture, freedom, and the vision of a Greece that dreams, fights, and creates.

It became the property of the Municipality of Glyfada in 1986, following the renovation of an old winter cinema, and since then it has hosted a number of cultural events, including film screenings, theatrical performances, tributes to creators, and thematic festivals that are renewed with rhythm and imagination.

In 2019, a complete renovation of the space was carried out, during which: a balcony was created, the foyer was expanded and upgraded, comfortable seating and new lighting were installed, and the stage was reconstructed to modern standards.

All areas were made fully accessible for people with disabilities.

The aesthetic upgrade is combined with functionality and comfort, making the hall ideal for theatrical performances, film screenings, lectures, and cultural activities.

The Municipality of Glyfada actively supports accessibility to art, with free concessions of the space to cultural associations, amateur groups, public schools, and social institutions of the city.

Melina Mercouri is not just a building – it is an open embrace of culture, a place where memory meets the present and envisions the future.

The modern sculptural theatre of Aixoni “replaced” the ancient theatre of Aixoni, which mysteriously disappeared and was a valuable reference point for Glyfada. The sculpted theatre is located on a magnificent slope of Mount Hymettus at the location “Aixoni” of the ancient municipality of Aixoni. It is essentially a damari recreated into a work of art.

It was included in 1984 in the programme for the restoration and regeneration of former quarries in Attica, which was started in 1983 by the Directorate of Construction Projects of the then Ministry of Planning, Housing and Environment. In the same year, it was included in the projects of the Municipality of Glyfada. The construction of the project of Nella Golanda, who was in charge of the project.

The Sculpture Theatre of Aixoni has been given a lot of credit by many prominent people such as:

“It is a feat, a nationwide work that praises us to foreigners as well”, Dim. Kapsanis, President of the Association of Friends of Aixoni Theatre

“What has been created here is unique in the place… A marriage of matter and spirit, of the old, of the rhizome with the revolutionary, the unconventional”,
Kostas Georgousopoulos, film critic.

Artists such as Thanasis Vengos, Mikis Theodorakis, Yannis Markopoulos, Kostas Kazakos, Thimios Karakatsanis, etc. have passed through the Sculpture Theatre of Aixoni.
