A tribute to Mikis Theodorakis on the 100th anniversary of his birth

The Popular Orchestra “Mikis Theodorakis” is present once again on a sensitive issue that gives yet another sad “first” in our country: the issue of stray animals. It is unfortunately a daily picture in all parts of Greece the abandonment and abuse of stray animals.

As of course, the struggle of the animal lovers, organized in animal welfare organizations or not, who give from their savings and their souls, save and treat every day what they can, but without being able to give a solution to the problem exclusively with their forces.

The Panhellenic Philozoological and Environmental Federation / PFPO is the largest animal welfare organization in Greece, and their ranks include 76 Associations. Their mission is to protect animals and promote animal welfare and rights through political pressure, legal actions, science-based positions and campaigns.

It is necessary to raise awareness of the State, the Local Government and all citizens, so that with a common struggle to change the tragic conditions under which stray animals live every moment, to eliminate the image that stigmatizes our country internationally.

Mikis Theodorakis was always present during his lifetime, hosting a large number of stray animals in his house, participating and supporting the efforts of the Animal Welfare Organizations of his neighbourhood and other areas.

The People’s Orchestra that bears his name, continuing his work in this field, participates in the big concert organized by the Municipality of Glyfada and the Panhellenic Philozoic and Environmental Federation (PFPO) on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in order to inform and raise awareness of all, competent persons, institutions and citizens on the issue of stray animals.

2025 “A tribute year for Miki Theodorakis”

on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Mikis Theodorakis was born on 29 July 1925. On the 29th of July 2025, Theodorakis would have been 100 years old. To commemorate this anniversary, the Ministry of Culture has declared 2025 the “Year of Miki Theodorakis”. “His life and work constitute an indescribable cultural heritage of Hellenism, highlighting its universality,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

The concert for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miki Theodorakis with the Miki Theodorakis Folk Orchestra will be a celebration of Greek music and the rich global cultural heritage left behind by the creator who spread Greek culture worldwide through his music, his ideas and his struggles.

The concert will feature the most beautiful and best known songs of Mikis Theodorakis, popular, zebec, but also erotic and lyrical.

Songs that were sung by the common people and are still on the lips of all of us and well-known melodies, culminating in the melody of Zorba, so beloved in the far reaches of the world.
