Glyfada sent us the message: One test, one moment for one life!

Today is World Breast Cancer Day and in our city, under the auspices of the Municipality of Glyfada, the great information, awareness and prevention campaign of the Hellenic Red Cross was completed in the best way.

“It was with great pleasure that we welcomed today in our city the long-distance athlete Sotiris Barbarosos, who covered with his canoe a distance of 110 nautical miles from Patras to Glyfada, with intermediate stops in Nafpaktos, Xylokastro and Loutraki, carrying a message of hope, strength and prevention of breast cancer”, said the Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou.

“One test, one moment, for one life”, said the President of the Hellenic Red Cross, Dr. Antonis Avgerinos, conveying the message of the campaign.

A unique moment was described by Sotiris Barbarosos: “Apart from the difficulties of the whole route”, he said, “there was an extraordinary moment when some dolphins were coming out of the water and re-entering on my left, while on my right, in the rescue boat, was Hera, the only dog of the Greek Red Cross that is a liquid element, for rescues. She saves people.”

The canoe with which Sotiris Barbarosos crossed the route Patras – Glyfada was drawn to a 19-year-old athlete.

The event was attended by, among others, the Deputy Mayor of Education, Lifelong Learning and Youth, Annie Kauka, the Deputy Municipal Councillor George Tavernarakis and the Municipal Councillor, President of the Association of Women with Breast Cancer of Glyfada “Together for Life” Sasha Pateraki.

During the event, the H.E.S. Mobile Health Team, staffed by medical and nursing personnel, offered free clinical screening by a doctor, the possibility of prescribing breast cancer screening imaging tests, experiential training in breast self-examination using educational templates, as well as counselling support for linking with public health units for those women who need further investigation.
