In a traditional way the Koulouma was celebrated on the beach of Glyfada

What happened this year on the beach of Glyfada was unique! Dozens of rotundas covered with white tablecloths were placed on the street, at Diadochou Pavlou, creating a wonderful festive image, under the bright sun and the colorful sky with kites, and showcasing the beauty of our seaside town in a wonderful way. A picture out of a fairy tale! The crowds of people, the Lenten delicacies – 3,000 portions of food were distributed, with bean soup, dolmades, salad, taramosalata, halva, as well as lagana and wine – to the sounds of traditional music by Katerina Katsigiannis and her orchestra, gave an amazing experience, amidst the exchange of wishes for “Happy Lent”.

“We celebrated this year’s Koulouma – on our beach this time – with all the best and above all with love and smiles.

And next year we will be well.

Happy Lent with health” wished the Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou.

The people sang, danced and had a good time at the beginning of this blessed march towards the Resurrection and Easter.

The responsibility and coordination of the event was the Deputy Mayor of Social Care and Solidarity Eleni Karahou – Skoutari with the valuable assistance of Deputy Mayors Dimitris Nitsiopoulos, Yannis Tzouvelis, Nikos Tsampiras, Yannis Skaltsas and the Deputy Councillors Georgia Vamvakeros, Stavros Yiakoumakis and George Tavernarakis, while the members of the Glyfada Municipal Council were present almost in their entirety.

In Greek tradition, the flying of the kite symbolizes the flight of the human soul towards its Creator. We fly the kite on Clean Monday, the day when the fasting of Lent begins, i.e. the day when our spiritual and physical purification begins. In this process we come closer to God. This contact is symbolized by the kite, which also draws closer to God by flying high in the sky.
