George Papanikolaou was born on August 15, 1977, and grew up in a large family, together with his parents Pavlos and Stamatia and his three siblings. He is married to lawyer Eva Doyakou, and they have two daughters and two sons.
He attended the 3rd Gymnasium–Lyceum of Glyfada and succeeded in the national university entrance exams, gaining admission to the Faculty of Law at the University of Athens. During his studies, he was actively involved in public affairs, representing his fellow students in the governing bodies of both the Law School and the University of Athens.
After completing his undergraduate degree, he was admitted—following exams—to the postgraduate program in Public Law at the University of Athens, which he completed successfully two years later. He has also attended a public administration course at Harvard University.
Since 2004, after an 18-month internship and passing the Athens Bar Association exams, he has been practicing law. He maintains law offices both on North Epirus Street in Glyfada and on Menandrou Street in central Athens.
In the summer of 2004, at the age of 27, he was elected by a large majority as President of ONNED (the youth wing of New Democracy), a position to which he was re-elected in 2007. He fulfilled his military service in the Hellenic Navy during 2006–2007.
In June 2009, he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the European People’s Party (EPP). During his term, he served on the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), where in 2013 he was elected coordinator for the EPP Group. He also served as Vice-Chair of the EU–Chile Interparliamentary Committee and as a member of the EUROLAT (Europe–Latin America) Parliamentary Assembly.
In May 2014, as head of the municipal party Our Glyfada, he was elected Mayor of Glyfada with 62.93% of the vote in the second round. He officially assumed office on September 1, 2014.
In May 2019, he was re-elected Mayor of Glyfada in the first round with 79.01% of the vote, again leading Our Glyfada.
In October 2023, he was re-elected for a third term, achieving 83.75% of the vote in the first round.
