In 1982, the Special Service for Municipalities and Communities was established and had just six responsibilities.
In 1991, the Special Service for Municipalities and Communities was established in Glyfada and staffed with 5 employees.
In 2002, it was renamed the Municipal Police and its responsibilities were increased.
In 2004, the uniform and badge of the Service were changed.
In 2008, the Municipal Police was restructured and its responsibilities, mode of operation, action, and staffing were redefined.
In 2013, the Service was abolished, only to be re-established in 2015.
Despite the size of the municipality, its needs, and the responsibilities of the Service, after its re-establishment in 2015, it is staffed by only 16 Municipal Police Officers, whereas the Service was staffed by 27 until its abolition.
Its fleet of vehicles consists of two patrol cars.
The Service is structured into two departments and one office:
the Shops and Businesses Control Department,
the Traffic and Parking Control Department, and
the Secretarial Support Office.
The most important responsibilities exercised by the Agency are the control of compliance with:
a) the legislation and local regulations issued by the municipal authorities for the use of alleys, gardens, squares, playgrounds, and other public spaces (Law 3731/2008, Article 1(2)),
b) the legislation and local regulations issued by the municipal authorities for the use and operation of fairs, Christmas markets, and open-air markets in general (Article 1(3)),
c) the provisions relating to open-air trade and markets (Article 1(4)),
d) the provisions concerning outdoor advertising etc. (Article 1(5)),
e) cleaning in public areas (Article 1(6)),
f) measures imposed for the prevention of fires in public open spaces (Article 1(7)),
g) the provisions concerning pedestrian traffic, the stopping and parking of vehicles, the circulation of wheeled vehicles in pedestrian streets, squares, pavements, etc. (Article 1(8)),
h) the provisions on abandoned vehicles (Article 1(10)),
i) the provisions on the marking of works carried out on roads etc. (Article 1(11)),
j) the provisions relating to pet animals (Article 1(24)),
k) the provisions concerning the regulatory decisions issued by the Municipality and the enforcement of the measures provided for by them (Article 1(25)),
l) the provisions on smoking (Law 3730/2008).
Additionally:
a) It participates in the implementation of the Civil Protection Plans (Law 3731/2008, Article 1(12)),
b) It executes administrative sanctions relating to the operation of shops whose operating licence is granted by the Municipality (Article 1(15)),
c) It protects municipal property (Article 1(25)),
d) It serves documents of the Municipality or other municipal authorities within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality (Article 1(28)).
