Sculpture Theatre "AIXONI"
The modern sculptural theatre of Aixoni stands as a symbolic replacement for the ancient theatre of Aixoni, which mysteriously vanished but once served as a valuable cultural landmark for Glyfada. This sculpted theatre is located on a magnificent slope of Mount Hymettus, in the area known as “Aixoni,” which was part of the ancient municipality of Aixoni. Essentially, it is a damari (an old quarry) that has been artistically transformed into a work of art.
In 1984, the theatre was included in a restoration and regeneration program for former quarries in Attica. This initiative had begun in 1983 under the Directorate of Construction Projects of the then Ministry of Planning, Housing, and Environment. The same year, it was also adopted as a project by the Municipality of Glyfada. The project was overseen by Nella Golanda, who was responsible for its construction.
The Sculpture Theatre of Aixoni has received high praise from many notable figures, including:
Dim. Kapsanis, President of the Association of Friends of Aixoni Theatre:
“It is a feat, a nationwide work that praises us to foreigners as well.”Kostas Georgousopoulos, film critic:
“What has been created here is unique in this place… A marriage of matter and spirit, of the old, of the rhizome with the revolutionary, the unconventional.”
The theatre has also hosted many prominent artists such as Thanasis Vengos, Mikis Theodorakis, Yannis Markopoulos, Kostas Kazakos, Thimios Karakatsanis, and others, marking it as a significant cultural venue in the region.
