It was the autumn of 2014 when the newly elected mayor George Papanikolaou, in conversation with the olive grower of Crete and active member of the municipal party “Our Glyfada” Stavros Yiakoumakis, took the decision to proceed with an action that was to become an institution in our city: the production of olive oil from the hundreds of olives that exist in parks, streets, squares and schools. The know-how was there and the idea became a reality! Since then, every autumn, Glyfada produces its own virgin olive oil of excellent quality and low acidity, which is distributed free of charge to the economically weak families of our city through the Social Grocery.
This year, for the 12th consecutive year, the harvesting of olive trees has started, a year in which -as the Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou emphasizes- the fruitfulness of olive trees is increased compared to last year’s period.
Specifically, the Mayor states:
“Olive harvesting 2025: the tradition continues!
The week started with some difficulties due to the weather conditions, but that didn’t stop us!
This year we started a favorite activity, a favorite annual tradition, which has been going on in Glyfada since 2014!
For yet another year, with the great assistance of volunteers and employees of our Municipality, we collect the olive fruits from the trees in the public areas of Glyfada, for a valuable purpose:
The production of our own high quality olive oil.
We note that this year, the fruiting of olive trees is increased compared to last year’s period, which predicts an extremely good production.
The oil we produce is distributed every year, just before the Christmas holidays, to the families of our city who need it, through our Social Structures.
It is an act of solidarity that fills us with joy and pride.
