The scientific workshop on the bioeconomy, co-organized by the Municipality of Glyfada and Cep-Hellas at the Cultural Center, was an extremely important and timely initiative for local government, attracting the interest of stakeholders, scientists, and citizens.
In his opening remarks, Glyfada Mayor George Papanikolaou set the tone for the day ahead, emphasizing that Glyfada serves as a model “green” city. He also spoke of the need to move away from the traditional model of consumption toward an economy where nothing goes to waste.
Dr. Stelios Theodosopoulos, spoke about the bioeconomy as a tool for Civil Protection, emphasizing practical applications that directly concern citizens, such as:
Strengthening and proper sorting at the source (recycling).
Utilization of bio-waste (e.g., conversion of organic waste into fertilizer/compost).
Reducing the energy footprint of municipal infrastructure.
The workshop highlighted that the bioeconomy not only protects the environment but also creates new opportunities for local entrepreneurship through the use of eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices.
Message of the Day:
Environmental protection is no longer just a theoretical obligation, but a daily practice and a major investment in the future of future generations in Glyfada.
The event concluded with an open discussion, reaffirming that collaboration between the municipality, the scientific community, and citizens is the “key” to successfully transitioning to a greener future.
