The Municipality of Glyfada and the Ministry of Defence honoured the Fallen of the Air Force

An event of honour and remembrance today in Glyfada, in honour of the fallen Airmen of our Air Force. The Municipality of Glyfada together with the political leadership of the Ministry of National Defence, the military leadership of the Armed Forces and the Air Force and the Region of Attica paid their due tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the Freedom and Independence of the Homeland.

The Mayor of Glyfada Mr. George Papanikolaou welcomed the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikos Dendias, the Bishop of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, Mr. Antonios, the Chief of the General Staff of the National Defence Staff, General Dimitrios Houpis, the Governor of Attica Mr. Nikos Chardalias, the Mayor of Alimos Mr. Andreas Kondylis, the Chief of the General Staff of the Air Force, Vice General (I) Mr. Demosthenes Grigoriadis, the Commander of the Air Support Command, Lieutenant General (I) Mr. Vasilios Broumas, the Commander of the Telecommunications and Electronic Media Factory (ETIM) Mr. Dimitrios Meleas, the Commander of the Glyfada Police Department, Deputy Police Director Mr. Konstantinos Mihos, the Commander of the Saronic Coast Guard Ms. Anna Sarli, the Deputy Commander of the 8th Athens Fire Station, Deputy Fire Chief Mr. Spyridon Kendarchos, the President of the Air Force Fallen Association Mr. President of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Southeast Attica, General Dimitrios Bouloukos, at the Air Force Fallen Airmen’s Memorial, which is located within the new Glyfada Cemetery.

A service was held by His Eminence Bishop Antonios of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, the Bishop of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari. Both the Mayor of Glyfada Mr. George Papanikolaou and the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikos Dendias wished that there would be no more entries in the list of fallen Airmen.

“Our wish is that no more names are written, that not a single line is added to this monument. And from now and forever, may none of our airmen fall in the line of duty. We are saddened, we are bitter, we are saddened that since 2018, when the New City Cemetery opened here, eight names have been added. Their memory is eternal. Immortals”, said among others the Mayor of Glyfada Mr. George Papanikolaou.

“We are all together. Those who have left, those who remain, those who will come, to be able to secure the future of the Homeland, of Hellenism, of society, of our fellow citizens. I wanted to thank you for the honor to our Air Force, to assure you of the continued and always at the highest level presence of the Air Force and the Ministry in the commemoration ceremony for the fallen of the Air Force. And to wish, as you do, that the list we honour today will remain as it is,” said Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias.

This was followed by a visit and tour of the adjacent area of the Telecommunications and Electronic Media Plant (ETIM), where a brief presentation of the Unit’s capabilities was given.

On the part of the Municipality of Glyfada, the President of the Municipal Council Mrs. Dafnoula Harisi – Bilia, the Deputy Mayors Mr. Yannis Tzouvelis, Mr. Nikos Tsampiras and Mr. Yannis Skaltsas, the Deputy Councillors Mr. Vassilis Nikakis, Mr. George Tavernarakis, Mr. Stavros Giakoumakis, Manolis Hantzos, Christos Michalakakos and Mrs Lena Denaksa, who presented the event, the Councillors Mr Nikos Vryzidis, Mr Spyros Dimou and Mr Petros Karaminas, the Secretary General of the Municipality of Glyfada Mr. George Grillas, the President of the Municipal Committee of Secondary Education Mrs. Maria Karambela – Karavousali, as well as the President of the New Democracy of Glyfada, Mr. Panagiotis Skaltsas.
