The Municipality of Glyfada takes legal action against DEDDIE for the blocking of the ravine above Metsovo Street

In full investigation of the causes which caused the events of January 21, so that never in the future to never repeat similar flooding phenomena, proceeds the Municipality of Glyfada. A technical expert opinion is already being drawn up with the assistance of experts, while the Municipality of Glyfada is taking legal action against the DEDDIE, which eight months ago blocked a gully above Metsovo Street to proceed with the undergrounding of its network, without any information whatsoever.

In his post, the Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou presents highly revealing photographic documents and stresses that he is determined to put his finger on the type of the sounds, in order to determine the exact causes of what happened and not to do something similar again.

Mr Papanikolaou’s statements are as follows:

“Like a dam broke!

This happened over Metsovo according to the experts we contacted.

Take a look at the photos to see exactly what happened.

In order to carry out the undergrounding project of its network, the DEDDIE last May in Ymittos above Metsovo Street in our city, blocked and closed the ravine at the point shown in the photos, about 850 meters above Metsovo Street.

It is a rubble dump measuring 15 metres long, more than 10 metres wide and 8 metres high (i.e. at least 1200 cubic metres of soil and debris).

See for yourself what we show you on Google Earth and on the Apple maps that have later images (you can see the blockage there).

The DEDDIE project literally caused the blockage of the stream and created a reservoir of water and debris.

It acted as a dam which then collapsed releasing violently and with incredible and multiple momentum the trapped amount of water, dragging even large rocks and flooding as we all experienced the downstream areas (Metsovo, Antheon, etc.).

That is why in Metsovo we have seen this incredible accumulation of waste materials and bazaars.

Of course, this picture we have will be thoroughly investigated and documented by a technical expert opinion, which we have already commissioned experts in these matters.

The Municipality of Glyfada has never received any information about the project and its studies (if any) – and still has no information.

We are committed to taking legal action against the DEDDIE and the whole truth will shine through in the courts and all responsibility will be placed where it belongs.

We will not rest until we find out the exact causes of what happened last Wednesday night in Glyfada – and of course if we don’t do everything in our power to prevent something similar from happening again.”
